Rethinking IBS: Clinical Foundations of the Microbiome and Gut-Brain Axis
IBS and functional gastrointestinal disorders remain some of the most prevalent — and challenging — conditions encountered in clinical practice. While dietary interventions and symptom-led protocols may offer short-term relief, many patients fail to achieve sustained improvement, highlighting deeper dysfunction within the gut microbiome and the gut–brain axis.
This clinical masterclass is designed to help healthcare professionals rethink how IBS is assessed and managed — shifting from symptom control toward a systems-based, clinically grounded approach.
Led by Elena Panzeri, MSc, BSc
This session is delivered by Elena Panzeri, a clinician with over 25 years of experience in natural medicine and highly personalised nutrition. Elena holds an MSc in Nutrition and Genetics and a BSc in Nutritional Therapy, alongside advanced qualifications in naturopathy and homeopathy.
Her expertise lies in Personalised and Functional Medicine Nutrition, with a strong focus on nutrigenetics, epigenetics, microbiome analysis, metabolomics, and advanced functional medicine testing. Elena is currently investigating the emerging links between the gut and oral microbiome and neurodegenerative conditions, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
Alongside her clinical work, Elena consults for Intus Biosciences, contributing to the clinical development of advanced microbiome testing and the interpretation of hundreds of complex patient profiles worldwide. Her teaching is known for translating sophisticated data into clear, clinically actionable insight.
Technology Insight: Gut ID
This masterclass is supported by Gut ID, an advanced gut microbiome testing platform that integrates DNA sequencing technology with AI-powered analysis. This approach enables a depth of microbial pattern recognition that has not previously been available through conventional microbiome testing.
Rather than focusing on the test itself, this session emphasises how and when microbiome data should be used clinically, helping practitioners develop the reasoning skills needed to interpret results meaningfully and responsibly in practice.
