Probiotics Demystified: How The Gut’s Second Brain Affects Mood

10th March 2021 | 6PM GMT

With Karen Harrison

  • In this masterclass, Karen will be investigating the microbiota-gut-brain axis. She will discuss how the microbiome has the capacity to affect the function of the brain; modulating cognition, behaviour, emotional regulation and sleep disturbance.Dive into research that has provided clues into the absence of, or alterations to, the gut microbiota affecting the response of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis to stress, behaviour responses, including anxiety and depressive-like behaviours.

Learning outcomes:

  • Discover the Mechanism of action of microbiota-gut-brain axis
  • Discuss the different mechanisms that have been found to modulate mood, such as: inflammation, neurotransmitter production, modulation of the immune system, production of neuromodulators, and enhancing barrier function
  • Understand which probiotic strain(s) appear to be an effective therapeutic tool for improving several aspects of mood and sleep quality in healthy adults

Join Karen Harrison for a unique Masterclass on discovering the mechanisms of the gut-brain-microbiome axis.
